The John R. Hayes High Steppin' Majorette & Drum Corps of Umoja is one of Asheville, North Carolina's longest-running and most influential African American artistic and youth development traditions.
The Corps was founded in 1977 by the late John R. Hayes, an Asheville community leader, civil rights activist, and radio station founder. It was originally known as the Hillcrest High Steppin' Majorettes and Drum Corps, operating out of the Hillcrest Apartments public housing development. Hayes was inspired by the legendary marching bands of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and the traditions of the former Stephens-Lee High School, Asheville's Black high school.
The program's mission has always been more than just performance; it is a youth-led initiative designed to honor the talents and voices of young people, instill discipline, camaraderie, and confidence, particularly for those from historically marginalized communities. Since its inception, over 10,000 young people have passed through its ranks. Following Elder Hayes's death in 2021, the group was renamed in his honor.
Today, the Corps is integrated into the Umoja Health, Wellness & Justice Collective, which continues John Hayes's legacy under the leadership of his son, Michael R. Hayes. The program now blends its marching tradition with Umoja's trauma-informed and resiliency-based healing framework. This approach ensures the youth are supported not only as performers but also as leaders healing themselves and their communities, providing a safe space for growth, belonging, and artistic expression.
